HPSS Tuimarishe Afya Project/Swiss TPH Contributes Over 350 Million Tanzanians Shillings in Response to Corona/COVID-19 in Tanzania

HPSS Tuimarishe Afya/Swiss TPH in collaboration  with Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) have contributed a sum of Tanzania shillings  (TZS) 355,424,000/= (CHF 150,000) to the Government of Tanzania (GoT) in response to Corona/COVID-19 in the country. This has come amid the GoT establishment of a national taskforce and working groups to coordinate activities on response to the virus.

HPSS Tuimarishe Afya Project is working closely with key decision makers at the Ministry of Health Community Development Gender and Elderly and Children (MoHCDGEC) and Presidents Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG) through the national task force and its subcommittees, which coordinate Corona/COVID-19 responses between GoT and its development partners. The GoT aims at printing one million posters, placing radio spots, establishing a national call centre, and establishing isolation centres, among other interventions.

The project is contributing to a number of activities that have been outlined by the GoT on its initiative on response to Corona/COVID-19 in the country. These activities include the following:

  • Printing 100,000 posters and logistically organizing their distribution in the country as part of the project’s support to the GoT communication strategy plan to inform the population on Corona/COVID-19;
  • Broadcasting radio spots produced by the GoT through the network of 35 Community Radio Stations, which reach most remote areas in the country;
  • Providing 12 desktop computers, 20 working stations and 30 office chairs to support MoHCDGEC to establish the National Call Centre for the Corona/COVID-19 and the national hotline number to accommodate thousands of calls per day;
  • Supporting the Government of Zanzibar in its Corona/COVID-19 communication strategy by providing health promotion activities through printed materials (posters) and radio campaigns to match the diagnostic support which is already being provided by Ifakara Health Institute (IHI);
  • Providing logistical support to the GoT through the use of project vehicles at central level and at the eight HPSS zonal offices for regional based surveillance, community activation and preparation of isolation centres and case management among others.

So far, through the established national taskforce, working groups and development partners’ substantial resources have been mobilized in terms of financial and non-financial to assist the GoT in response to Corona/COVID-19 in Tanzania.
